With the right tools, it's a natural for tracking information created by humans, including the contents of product manuals, technical material, Web sites, and program documentation.

Blast says Xmetal Reviewer's real-time collaboration feature is unique, along with its ability to work with native XML files. The product includes integration for Word documents; integration with external applications can be done through APIs on the XMetaL Reviewer server.

According to John Holden, a senior research analyst with the Butler Group, features of the product that make it stand out include the Web-based user interface and its embedded contextual collaboration. That last feature, Holden says, can help make XML authoring part of a company's overall business processes.

Folksonomies

xml content management compliance regulations xmetal blast radius corel api

Interwoven ECM Replaces Multiple Homegrown Systems at Canada's National Public Broadcaster

Interwoven, Inc. announced that CBC.ca, the main English-language website of
the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has chosen Interwoven ECM to
underpin the production and management of its online news, information and
entertainment content. But, by analyzing the unstructured data in the comments field of a warranty claim, the manufacturer can identify the set of circumstances that may have caused a problem. Reading through thousands of warranty claims is not feasible, but using a text analytics tool, the manufacturer can analyze all of this unstructured data to pull out potential root causes for warranty repairs. The combined result, in this case, is that the carmaker knows what repairs were made, when, how old the vehicle was and what the root cause was.

To effectively realize the benefit of integrating structured and unstructured data, BI must include an integrated view of structured and unstructured data. Advances in standards, hardware, software and storage are making this integrated view possible. The relational leaders such as IBM, Microsoft and Oracle are already raising the stakes by offering better support for unstructured content. With its acquisition of Venetica in August of 2004, IBM Software Group's Data Management unit extended its access to unstructured data sources. For its part, Oracle provides enhanced support unstructured content management with Oracle 10g. XML's emerging prevalence along with better, faster text analysis tools make tagging unstructured data and integrating it into structured data sets a reality.

Folksonomies

content This number is expected to rise to 15.8 MB per user, per day by 2008.

Authentica Announces Active Rights Management Platform

Authentica, Inc., a provider of enterprise rights management (ERM) solutions, has introduced its next-generation active rights management (ARM) platform, an integrated ERM solution that is designed to combine document and email protection in a single platform.

Authentica's ARM is intended to deliver a range of integration support, extending its benefits to enterprise compliance/archiving, content management, and mobile email applications. The key to success: focus on enablement, not on automation.

Agfa came to focus on a class of products for product data management (PDM) offered primarily by the providers of solutions for computer-aided design (CAD). The company's CAD vendor proposed a $3 million pilot project using the provider's latest product lifecycle management (PLM) solution, and the vendor even went through a comprehensive return-on-investment process to demonstrate that Agfa would see an ROI within 18 months. But Holleran says that because the vendor had only recently acquired the PDM solution, he had doubts about the software's integration with the rest of the provider's PLM suite. Not to mention the $3 million price tag. Disorganized information, or data without a reliable search or index is useless to information workers.

A lot is at stake, explains analyst Alan Pelz-Sharpe of Ovum. "Critical information is getting lost in the deluge." When information is lost, so are deals, customers, and revenues, so every business should pay attention. Unfortunately, as Pelz-Sharpe notes, this "is such a remarkably dull topic that keeping anyone's interest for more than a few minutes can be tough."

That's a kind of implicit advice to enterprise content management (ECM) vendors to gussy up their sales talk. Instead of discussing the efficiencies of filing, for example, vendors need to talk about what happens when, say, the right copy of a contract can't be located.

Ektron CMS Powering Ticketmaster Extranet

Ektron Inc., an innovator in Web content management and authoring software, today announced that Ticketmaster, the world's leading ticketing company, recently implemented Ektron's content management solution for its extranet. This evolution means that content management is not just about those 'content specialists' anymore, but about the rest of us who need some amount of content management functionality to complete parts of our everyday work -- from drafting a new business plan to sharing content with a virtual team - or getting a new business practice approved by multiple department heads.

The drivers of this change in the market are not new -- only more urgent. At every level in an organization there is real pain related to the lack of management of electronic content. But the straw that is really breaking the camel's back is the concern about managing content for business risk, compliance, and legal discovery. Executives are reminded daily (ten CEOs have now lost their jobs after investigations in New York state alone) about the risk posed by discoverable content like email, documents, or instant messages. Meanwhile, employees are experiencing content overload and finding it harder and harder to locate and collaborate on content to get their work done. To make matters worse, IT is fighting a losing battle to manage the explosion of content cost-effectively and to surface content through portals and applications into emerging service-oriented architectures. So, it hurts at all levels in the enterprise -- and that means it is time for a change.

Top Businesses Unprepared for Data Protection Laws & Regulations

McAfee today announced findings from research, which shows that senior IT decision makers in large corporations worldwide are unaware of their responsibilities under government regulation when it comes to email security.

The McAfee research also reveals that many organizations are potentially leaving themselves open to legal action and employee lawsuits by failing to filter certain types of content from email entering and leaving their network. Addtionally, many organizations that rely upon documents, law firms for example, have no reliable versioning systems for monitoring their document changes over time.

Ken Young over at Legal IT has a report on the changes taking place in content management, records management and knowledge management.

In recent years DM has been enhanced by the concept of ‘enterprise content management’ (ECM), which is defined as the technologies used to capture, manage, store, preserve and deliver content and documents related to business processes. Solutions in this growing niche stress continuity (24x7), staff collaboration, compliance and reduced costs through standardisation and centralisation.

"ECM is a term that is now grossly misused. In essence it is not a case of DM versus ECM because DM is effectively an element of ECM as is web content management services, asset management, portal, search, business services and so on. The key point is that industry researchers such as Gartner view document management as the most significant type of content management in the entire enterprise picture."

Homestore could lead online real estate pack in 2005

Innman News Reports that the buzz on Wall Street is that this year could belong to Homestore's Web Portal. That lies in a recent deal the online company made with real estate franchise giant NRT.

Homestore purchased Top Producer, which was a leading real estate sales and web content management system software company.

Homestore estimates it will make $3 million to $5 million in revenue this year from the NRT enhanced listing deal.
